What is a local SEO audit?

A local SEO audit is a snapshot health check of every signal Google actually uses to rank a location-based business — the Google Business Profile, the on-page relevance of the linked website, the technical foundation (HTTPS, sitemap, schema, Core Web Vitals), citation coverage across trusted directories, review velocity and sentiment, and the map-pack visibility around the storefront. The SignalSumo Free Local SEO Audit tool bundles all seven of those checks into one instant report — with a composite 0-100 score, prioritized fixes and a competitor snapshot — so you know exactly what to work on next.

Key takeaways
  • Seven signals in one composite score — Google Business Profile, on-page SEO, technical SEO, PageSpeed, map-pack rankings, competitor snapshot and citation coverage.
  • Zero-signup free tier — one audit per business runs in ~30 seconds without an account.
  • Works on any business — we never ask for Google Business Profile write access, so you can audit your own listing, a prospect's, or a competitor's.
  • The AI executive summary names the four highest-impact fixes and estimates the lift you get by shipping them.
  • Signup unlocks the parts that need persistent tracking — 100-keyword daily rank sweeps, geo-grid map-pack, competitor monitoring, citation scans and weekly emailed reports.
  • Report-only by design: nothing is written back to Google. You get the diagnosis and the fix; you apply it in the source.

What the free audit checks

Seven categories, one composite score

Google Business Profile

Name, address, phone, category, hours, primary photo, rating and review count — every field the map pack reads.

On-page website SEO

Title tags, meta descriptions, H1 hierarchy, keyword targeting, service pages and location-specific landing pages.

Technical SEO

HTTPS, sitemap discovery, robots.txt, canonical tags, LocalBusiness schema, mobile usability and indexability.

PageSpeed & Core Web Vitals

Mobile LCP, CLS, INP and TTFB measured on the actual homepage — Google's speed thresholds, unmodified.

Map-pack visibility (sample)

Where you show up on Google Maps for category and category+city searches near the storefront — a starter reading.

Competitor snapshot

Ranked list of businesses in your category within a 5 km radius — reviews, rating and distance for each.

Review signals

Rating average, review count, velocity over the last 30 days, and reply cadence — the four numbers Google uses.

Citation coverage (sample)

Presence on the big-five directories — Yelp, Yellow Pages, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places — with mismatch flags.

AI opportunities summary

The four highest-impact fixes across all seven categories, with expected lift in local visibility.

How the audit works

From business name to growth plan in five clicks
1

Search your business

Type the business name in the search box. Autocomplete resolves it to a real Google Places entry so the audit runs on the right listing.

2

Confirm the match

Click the correct listing from the dropdown — name, address and category are all shown so you never audit the wrong location.

3

Wait 20–30 seconds

The tool crawls your website, resolves the Google listing, checks technical SEO and Core Web Vitals, and pulls a competitor snapshot in parallel.

4

Read your Local SEO Score

A 0–100 composite score plus six KPIs, ranked competitors on a map, benchmarks vs. local average and category leader, and an AI-written headline finding.

5

Act on the top 4 opportunities

Every audit ships with a prioritized "biggest opportunities" list — high-impact fixes with expected lift in local visibility. Do them, re-audit, watch the score climb.

Where the numbers come from

Methodology — every reading is sourced
  • Listing data — resolved through Google Places, enriched via enterprise-grade SERP infrastructure (category, hours, rating, review count, photos).
  • Rankings sample — real map-pack SERP queries at the storefront location. Full geo-grid is a signup unlock.
  • Core Web Vitals — Google's public CrUX dataset for the last 28 days of real-user readings; if the URL is too small to be in CrUX we fall back to a live lab test.
  • Site health — our own crawler fetches the homepage and runs the checks locally. Nothing is written to the site.
  • Citations sample — direct checks against each of the big-five directories, not a third-party aggregator.
  • AI opportunities — a rules-engine ranks every detected issue by expected lift, then a language model writes the headline finding. Every claim maps back to a measured value.
Honesty guardrails

The free tier can only show a sample of the two most-expensive signals — map-pack rankings and citation coverage — because those cost real SERP budget per keyword and per directory. The full sweep is a signup unlock, not a paywalled marketing trick.

The audit is report-only. We never modify your Google listing, your website or your directory listings. You get the diagnosis; you apply the fix in the source.

Frequently asked questions

Nine common questions about the free audit

It bundles seven checks into a single report: your Google Business Profile (name, address, phone, category, hours, review count), on-page SEO of your linked website, technical SEO (HTTPS, sitemap, robots, canonicals, schema), Core Web Vitals / PageSpeed on mobile, a sample of local map-pack rankings, competitor snapshot within a 5 km radius, and an AI executive summary that names the four highest-impact fixes.

No. Anyone can paste a business name and run one free audit — no email, no credit card, no login. Signing up unlocks the parts that cost real API budget or need persistent tracking: 100-keyword daily rank tracking, geo-grid map-pack sweeps, competitor change monitoring, citation directory scans, historical trends and weekly emailed reports.

About 20 to 30 seconds. The tool crawls the linked website, resolves the Google listing, runs a PageSpeed measurement and pulls a competitor snapshot in parallel. You watch a seven-step progress checklist while it runs.

A composite of seven weighted signals: listing completeness (20%), review health (15%), technical SEO (15%), on-page SEO (10%), PageSpeed / Core Web Vitals (10%), citation coverage (15%) and category-specific keyword visibility (15%). Anything above 85 is Excellent; 70-84 is Good; 55-69 is Needs Work; below 55 is At Risk.

Google Places for listing resolution; enterprise-grade SERP infrastructure for the map-pack sample and public listing details; Google's open Core Web Vitals dataset for the speed reading; our own crawler for the site health check; and our editorial rules-engine for the "biggest opportunities" writeup. Every card carries the timestamp of the last successful pull.

Any business. The tool never asks for Google Business Profile write access, so it works on your listing, a prospect's listing, or a competitor's — as long as they exist on Google Places. Nothing is written back to Google either way; the audit is report-only.

Paid tools bundle rank tracking, citation building and review management on top of the audit. The free tool gives you the audit itself — score, issues, opportunities and a competitor snapshot — so you know whether the paid tools are worth adding. Every locked card on the report card shows exactly what the paid tier adds.

Only if you sign up. Without an account the audit runs, renders in your browser and disappears when you close the tab. With a free account we save the audit and re-run it on your schedule so you can watch the score change as you apply the fixes.

You need a Google Business Profile before this tool (or any local SEO tool) can help. Google Places is where local rankings come from — no listing means no map pack, no reviews and no local pack impression share. Creating one is free at google.com/business and takes about 15 minutes.
