A Semrush alternative for search and AI answers
Everything you use a traditional suite for — technical audits, rank tracking, keyword research, backlinks — plus the answer to the question none of them was built around: what ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity actually say when someone asks about your category.
Not a mention counter. The answer text itself, whether you are named, which competitors were named instead, and the sources the engine cited to decide — across four engines, from the $49 plan rather than a top tier or a paid add-on.
Semrush is the deeper platform for advertising and market research, and this page says exactly where. On the AI answer question, we go further down than a dashboard number.
- The real answer text from four engines. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, each queried directly — with the brands named beside you and the sources cited.
- AI visibility from the $49 plan. Not a top-tier feature, not a separate add-on, not metered per query.
- A content score you can audit. 20 named rules, 100 points, and the exact score change of every AI edit shown before you accept it.
- MCP and API access from Pro. Point your own assistant at your own SEO data and ask it questions directly.
- One plan, not seven modules. Audits, rankings, keywords, links, local and uptime monitoring at the same price.
Four numbers, before the sales pitch
Comparison pages are cheap to write and easy to fake. These four are the ones we would want a sceptical reader to check first — each is a figure from the running product, not a claim about a market.
Where the two products differ in kind, not degree
Feature checklists flatter whoever writes them. This one is organised by the job you are hiring the tool for, and the SignalSumo column carries real limits rather than ticks.
| The job | Semrush | SignalSumo |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl and fix a site | A mature, extensive site audit | Yes — up to 10,000 pages per crawl on Pro, 100,000 on Agency |
| Track Google positions | Yes, at enterprise scale | Yes — 750 keywords on Pro, 2,000 on Agency, with a daily-checked pool of 25 and 100 |
| Research keywords | A very large keyword database | 75 searches/month on Pro, 200 on Agency, with intent and SERP features |
| Analyse backlinks | A large, well-known link index | Profile, gap, opportunities, broken links; monitoring re-checks every 7 days |
| Know if AI recommends you | Not what the product is built around | Core product. Four engines queried directly: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity |
| Score a draft before publishing | Yes, as part of the content suite | Search Readiness Score — 20 named rules, 100 points, 6 categories |
| Advertising and market research | A genuine strength of the platform | Not offered. Deliberately out of scope |
| Report to clients | Available on higher tiers | White-label PDF on Pro; embeddable widgets and white-label on Agency |
| Start without a sales call | Free account with limits | Free plan plus public tools, no card |
| Published price | On their pricing page | $49 Mid · $99 Pro · $249 Agency, per month |
The Semrush column deliberately carries no prices, index sizes or quotas. Those change without telling us, and a stale number about someone else’s product is worse than no number. Everything in the SignalSumo column can be checked against the plan you are on.
The gap this page exists to name
Traditional suites were built when the answer to a query was ten blue links. A growing share of buying questions is now answered by an assistant that names three brands and moves on. If you are not one of the three, no amount of position tracking will tell you why.
Four engines, asked the real question
SignalSumo sends each engine the question your buyer would actually type, then reads the answer that comes back: whether you are named, in what position, in what tone, which competitors appear beside you, and which sources the engine cited to get there.
That is four separate products under the hood — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity — because their answers genuinely differ, and an average across them would hide the one that matters to your market.
Share of voice against whoever gets named instead
Every scan records the other brands the engine recommended. Over weeks that becomes a share-of-voice picture: who owns the answer for your category, who is gaining, and which sources they are cited from that you are absent from.
It is the same competitive question you already ask about Google rankings, asked about the surface that increasingly comes first.
The essentials, with the numbers attached
Nothing here is exotic. It is the work you already do every week — the difference is that the limits are published rather than discovered on the day you hit one.
Audit, rank tracking, keywords, links
The crawler handles up to 10,000 pages per crawl on Pro and 100,000 on Agency. Rank tracking follows 750 keywords on Pro and 2,000 on Agency, with a daily-checked pool for the ones that move.
Backlinks cover the profile, the gap against competitors, link opportunities from shared referring domains, and broken links — with monitoring that re-checks every seven days on every paid plan.
A content score you can argue with
The Search Readiness Score is 20 named rules totalling 100 points. Not a proprietary blend — a list. Title contains keyword, 5. Direct answer in the first 200 words, 3. FAQ block present, 3. Schema markup, 3.
You can disagree with a rule and see exactly what disagreeing costs you. And when the AI proposes a fix, you see the proposed text, the score change and the rules it moves before you accept it.
What each plan actually includes
These are the live limits, not a summary of them. Where a plan does not include something, the cell says so.
| Limit | Free | Mid $49 | Pro $99 | Agency $249 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Projects | 1 | 5 | 10 | 25 |
| Tracked keywords | 3 | 100 | 750 | 2,000 |
| Pages per crawl | 200 | 5,000 | 10,000 | 100,000 |
| Competitor research / month | 1 | 10 | 30 | 75 |
| Keyword searches / month | 10 | 25 | 75 | 200 |
| AI growth plans / month | — | 5 | 10 | 35 |
| Team seats | — | — | 2 | 5 |
| API and MCP access | — | — | Yes | Yes |
| White-label PDF reports | — | — | Yes | Yes |
Annual billing is cheaper per month; the figures above are the monthly rate. Free tools on the site run without an account at all.
The only score here that tells you what it does not know
Ask most tools for a content score and you get one number. You cannot see which parts were measured, which were modelled, or which were guessed because a data source was unavailable that morning — and so you cannot tell whether acting on it is worth your Tuesday.
Open a page in our optimizer and it may read 45 of 45, with 55 points withheld — because topical coverage, off-page and technical signals are not connected to that page yet. They are withheld, not counted against you, and named so you can see exactly what is missing.
That runs through the whole product. Every AI edit shows its exact score change and the rules it moves before it touches your document. A metric we cannot source is labelled unsourceable rather than interpolated. An outage reads as an outage, not as a zero that drags an average down.
This is the edge that is hardest to copy, because it costs something to ship: our dashboards look more modest than a competitor willing to estimate. In exchange, every number we show you is one you can act on and defend.
Switching without a leap of faith
The honest version: you will not migrate historical reports, and you should not try to. Run both for one reporting cycle and let the overlap make the decision.
Scan before you sign up
Run the free AI visibility check on your domain. It answers the one question your current suite cannot, in about a minute, with no account.
Point a project at your domain
Onboarding detects your site, pulls the keywords you already rank for, and suggests the competitors it can see in your market.
Overlap deliberately
Keep your existing subscription for one cycle. Compare the audit findings and the rank movements against what you already trust.
Decide on evidence
If the overlap has become boring, the migration is already done. If it has not, you have lost one month of a $49 plan.
Historical data does not transfer between SEO platforms in either direction — that is a property of the category, not of this product.
Where Semrush is the better answer
We do not offer advertising research or market intelligence. No ad copy databases, no whole-market traffic modelling, no audience overlap. If those inform your strategy, no amount of AI visibility replaces them.
We do not claim to match a decade-old crawl infrastructure on index size. For long-tail keyword archaeology and the deepest link graphs, the larger index wins, and it will keep winning.
And if your team already runs smoothly on their workflow, the switching cost is real and mostly invisible: retrained habits, rebuilt reports, re-agreed definitions. A tool that is 20% better rarely survives that maths. We would rather you added our free AI scan alongside what you have than churned unhappily.
- Advertising and PPC competitive research is part of your weekly work. We do not do it at all.
- You rely on market intelligence — whole-market traffic estimates, audience overlap, category trends.
- Your team is trained on their workflow and the retraining costs more than the licence saves.
- You need the deepest possible long-tail keyword database for programmatic research at scale.
Questions people ask before switching
Is SignalSumo a genuine Semrush alternative or just a cheaper one?
For technical audits, rank tracking, keyword research and backlinks, it is a genuine replacement for most small and mid-sized teams. For advertising research and market intelligence it is not a replacement at all, because those are not offered. The AI answer-visibility layer has no direct equivalent in a traditional suite, so on that axis it is an addition rather than a swap.
Which AI engines does SignalSumo actually check?
Four, all live today: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Each is queried directly rather than inferred from the others, and each scan records whether your brand is named, its position in the answer, the sentiment, the competing brands mentioned and the sources cited.
How much does SignalSumo cost compared with Semrush?
SignalSumo publishes three paid plans: Mid at $49 a month, Pro at $99 and Agency at $249, plus a free plan that needs no card. We do not list competitor prices here because they change and a stale figure would mislead you — compare against their current pricing page.
What is the Search Readiness Score?
A 0–100 content score built from 20 named rules across six categories: on-page match worth 25 points, topical coverage 20, answer-engine readiness 15, off-page 15, technical 15 and search intent 10. Every point traces to a specific rule, so you can see precisely what a fix is worth before you make it.
Why does the score sometimes say 45 of 45 instead of a number out of 100?
Because the remaining points cover signals that are not connected to that page yet, and we withhold them rather than estimating them. They are not counted against you. A tool that fills the gap with a guess gives you a rounder number and a worse decision.
Can I run SignalSumo alongside my existing suite?
Yes, and for the first cycle we recommend it. Many teams keep their incumbent tool for breadth and add SignalSumo specifically for AI answer visibility, which traditional suites were not built to measure.
Will my historical data transfer if I switch?
No, and neither will it transfer in the other direction — SEO platforms do not exchange historical reports. What you get instead is a fast start: onboarding detects your domain, imports the keywords you already rank for, and suggests competitors automatically, so a workspace is populated in minutes.
Is there a free way to evaluate it properly?
Yes. The free AI Rank Checker runs without an account, and the free plan includes one project, three tracked keywords and a 200-page crawl — enough to judge the audit and the interface on your own site rather than on a demo.
Does SignalSumo suit agencies?
Pro and Agency include white-label PDF reporting; Agency adds embeddable widgets, white-label embeds, 25 projects and five team seats. Both tiers include API and MCP access, so an assistant can query your data directly.
What does SignalSumo deliberately not do?
Advertising and PPC research, market intelligence, social media management, and matching the largest link indexes on raw size. Those are stated here rather than buried, because a comparison page that claims parity everywhere is not a comparison.
